Working Together

The greatest pleasure I have received from serving as GSBYRA President, other than being involved with all of the sailors Bay wide, is serving on the GSBYRA board with such amazing people. It has been an honor serving over the last few years with First VP Joe Mullé, Second VP David Hale, Race Chair Steve Kelley, Treasurer Melanie Oswalt, Secretary Linda Hotchkiss, and all of the dedicated delegates. These incredible people help to keep all that is wonderful about the Great South Bay and its racing community alive on the South Shore.

I would additionally thank Glenn and Dianne Schmidt, MaryAnn Deering, Phil Linker, and Gerry Holwell, all of whom have helped to keep GSBYRA running on the proper course and to keep traditions alive. They continuously steer the organization and sailing Bay wide to move forward and grow with the times.

We also thank the Long Island Maritime Museum for being part of our history as well as part of our present. While the museum houses all of our perpetual trophies, the museum also graciously hosts all GSBYRA meetings. The museum is invaluable to all of us. Please seriously consider supporting the Martine museum via a membership.

As we gear up for 2016 we are very proud to enter another season with fantastic junior regatta participation. We plan to continue the unwavering support of our junior program and season events. We also heard the sailors loud and clear and will make sure that we are supporting adult sailing. We scheduled some new events that we hope will peak the interest of many and I sincerely hope that participation increases since much effort is devoted into making these good events for you, the sailors:

  • the J24 event at Sayville Yacht Club, with boats provided by Sayville;
  • Babylon Yacht Club once again holding a two day 4th of July Regatta in the hope of making a more memorable event;
  • the return of Adult Race Week;
  • and revised GSBYRA Championships open to an unlimited number of competitors from each club.

Please share all of your thoughts and suggestions with your Club Delegate, who serves as your voice on the Bay. We value any and all suggestions.

For all junior and adult sailing events please check the schedule in the back of the GSBYRA yearbook. From the online schedule at gsbyra.org sailors should register in advance for these events online with the link to Regatta Network.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy and safe 2016 sailing season!
